in search of the giant’s wife: herstories of rombald’s moor

CURRENTLY IN PRE-PRODUCTION

A collaboration with Eve Miller, combining our practices in artist’s film and ceramic sculpture, inspired by and responding to the iconic landscape, archaeology and mythology of Rombald’s Moor, West Yorkshire.

The project explores different kinds of human connection to the Moor, acknowledging its significance as a site of creative activity and expression since the Neolithic Age. Responding to archaeological artefacts, such as standing stones, cairns and rock carvings, we’re playing with the idea of ‘casting’ in different forms - clay sculpture, film projection and magic - and casting light on hidden ‘herstories’ and myths emerging from the landscape.

We’re making 16mm films and audio recordings of performances/interactions with the moorscape, led by the stories we’ve gathered. Then we’re using sustainably-sourced organic materials from the locale – plants, flowers and grasses – to make non-toxic eco film developers to hand-process the film. Finally, we’re creating casts from stones and artefacts in the landscape and remaking them in clay as an array of place-responsive sculptures.

The work will be shown as an installation combining ceramic sculpture, analogue film projections and organic matter. There will be space for a artists’ talks, performances, and storytelling workshops engaging with the themes of the exhibition. Watch this space!

We received funding from Bradford Arts and Heritage small grants programme to work with Friends of Ilkley Moor, local archaeologists and members of the public to collect stories about and experiences of Rombald’s Moor through walks, talks and creative workshops with local communities in Ilkley and Shipley.
