UNRAVEL: the longest hand painted film in britain.
Winner of the Royal College of Art Deutsche Bank Award for Art 2010, the collaborative project Unravel (2010-2013) created the longest hand-painted 16mm film in Britain, correlating in length (at a ratio of one frame per metre) to the 874-mile distance between John O Groats and Lands End.
The film was produced through a UK-wide programme of open-access, cameraless filmmaking workshops, with 3000+ participants, in galleries, museums, film festivals and community venues across the UK. Unravel brought celluloid to new audiences in an accessible and hands-on way, stressing the experimental and tactile nature of collaborative camera-less filmmaking.
Unravel comprised of Maria Anastassiou, Chris Paul Daniels, Kelvin Brown, Joanna Byrne, and Mark Pickles.

The film consists of 16 hours of (digitised) hand-painted footage, accompanied by a complex, multilayered soundtrack, formed from interviews with participants, field recordings and optical sound taken directly from the 16mm filmstrip itself.
